Department: Recovery Room

Responsible To: Director of Surgical ! Services, Charge RN Recovery Room

Education/Training: BSN preferred. In lieu of BSN, commitment to earn BSN within an established period of time may be required.

Experience: One year of Med/Surg experience required. Critical Care or PACU experience desired. BLS and ACLS required.

License: Valid State of Florida Nursing License.

Physical Requirements: Good physical condition to occasionally sit; frequently stand, walk bend/stoop, and squat; occasionally kneel, reach above should level, and balance; ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull maximum over 50lbs with assistance; must continually be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate.

Environmental Conditions: Primarily works inside (75% if time) and may experience the following hazards: biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperature extremes.

! Occupational Exposure: Category I = Job involves tasks ! or procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identifies and prioritizes the needs of the post-anesthesia patient and initiates care plan.

Maintains a patient airway on all non-reacted patients by exhibiting proficiency in the use of various airways, jaw thrust, etc.

Demonstrates proficiency in starting IV’s utilizing proper technique. Administers medication correctly via the proper route and demonstrates awareness of possible interactions between medications given in recovery and those medication/anesthetic agents given in the operating room.

Demonstrates the ability to recognize and intervene in life threatening emergencies, including the administration of emergency drugs, and defibrillator or other emergency treatment. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, s! afety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area (child/adult/geriatric).

Demonstrates proficiency in carrying out physician’s orders as they apply to recovery room seating. Exhibits expertise in the care and use of recovery room equipment. Reports unusual circumstances, untoward patient reactions, etc. to the appropriate individual. Uses treatment trays as necessary ensuring needles, syringes, and other sharps are disposed of properly. Gives comprehensive and accurate report to the floor nurse prior to the patient’s transfer back to the floor/unit.

Demonstrates the proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment and maintains adequate supply levels.

Routinely determines that controlled drug count is correct, and notifies proper personnel when discrepancies are documented. Maintains a complete and accurate recovery room/outpatient surgery record that reflects the ! patient’s stability, response to medications, treatments, condition u! pon discharge, etc. Identifies cardiac arrhythmia correctly and is able to intervene with appropriate treatment.

Effectively conducts a pre-operative interview with patient. Accurately screens patient’s charts pre-operatively and obtains data as needed.

Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Director.
